“Stonehaven reimagined our entire back property — terracing, stone paths, the garden rooms. The design process was meticulous and honest about cost at every stage. The finished result is everything we hoped for and then some. Our property now looks like it belongs on the pages of a garden magazine.”

The Studio
Design and build as a single discipline.
Stonehaven was founded on a frustration with the gap between landscape design and landscape construction — beautiful plans that get value-engineered into mediocrity by the time the last stone is placed.
We solve that by keeping design and build under one roof. Our principals design every project. Our crews execute it. No handoffs, no telephone-game translations. The garden you approve is the garden we build.
Material honesty
We specify materials for how they age, not how they photograph. Natural stone, locally sourced where possible.
Ecological grounding
Every planting plan considers site hydrology, native adaptation, and four-season succession.
Architectural rigor
We design outdoor rooms with the same spatial discipline as interior architecture — proportion, hierarchy, sequence.
Our Work
Six disciplines. One integrated studio.
Every project draws on multiple disciplines simultaneously — stone work, planting, lighting, built structures. We manage them as a unified design problem, not a checklist of subcontractors.
How We Work
A process built for projects of consequence.
Site Consultation
We walk your property together — no fee, no pressure. We assess drainage, sun, existing planting, and the relationship between house and land. We ask questions. We listen.
Design Development
Our principals produce a site-specific design: CAD drawings, planting plans, 3-D renders for major features. Two revision rounds. You approve a plan that can actually be built for the agreed budget.
Build
Our crews — the same people who worked on your neighbor's project last spring — execute the design. The designer is on-site for key installations. No subcontracting the parts that matter.
Handoff & Care
We walk the finished property with you, document every plant, and provide a seasonal care guide. Clients who choose our maintenance program get the same crew back twice a month, indefinitely.

Client Perspective
What our clients say.
“The bluestone terrace Stonehaven built off our main living space is extraordinary. Three years in and there's not a single issue — perfectly level, beautifully jointed, and it looks like it's always been there. Their stone crew clearly knows what they're doing. The estimate was exactly what we paid.”
“Our pergola and outdoor kitchen turned a slope we never used into the most-used space on our property. Stonehaven handled everything: design, permitting, gas line, the grill, the lighting. One contractor, one conversation. It was the most organized construction project we've ever been through.”
“The naturalistic meadow planting along our property edge has been a revelation. Four seasons of interest, almost no maintenance, and the wildlife it's attracted is remarkable. The design team knew their plants deeply and made a compelling case for every choice. It looks completely natural and completely intentional at the same time.”
“The lighting transformed our property at night in a way I didn't think was possible. It's warm, architectural, and tasteful — nothing like the harsh uplighting you see on most houses. Stonehaven's designer walked the property with us at dusk and tested every fixture before they trenched a single wire. That level of care was evident throughout.”
“We've had Stonehaven maintain our property for six years. Same crew, same foreman, written notes after every visit. Our landscape still looks the way it did when they finished building it — which is rare. That consistency and continuity is genuinely hard to find in this industry.”
Common Questions
Honest answers before we meet.
We believe in transparent conversations about cost, timeline, and process before a project begins. These are the questions we hear most often.
Don't see your question here?
Call or email the studio directly — we respond to every inquiry within one business day.
Design-build projects range from $45,000 for focused improvements like a stone terrace and planting renovation to $350,000+ for full estate transformations. We're transparent about cost at every stage: our initial consultation is complimentary, and we provide a detailed written scope with line-item pricing before any contract is signed. We don't do 'ballpark estimates' — we do real numbers.
A focused hardscape or planting project typically runs 8–14 weeks from signed contract to completion. Full design-build projects — where we're designing and permitting before building — generally take 5–9 months. We set a written construction calendar at contract signing and hold to it. Our current lead time from initial consultation to project start is approximately 10–14 weeks.
Our design-build work is integrated by nature — we're most effective when we design what we build. That said, we evaluate renovation projects and additions to existing landscapes case by case. If your property has good bones and a defined scope, we're open to the conversation. Our estate maintenance program is exclusively for properties we've built.
Yes. We hold a Massachusetts Contractor License (#CS-112847), are fully bonded, and carry $2M general liability and workers' compensation insurance. All applicable work is pulled with the proper permits and inspected to code. We can provide certificates of insurance to your attorney or lender upon request.
Our design fee covers site survey, soil analysis, CAD base plan, a detailed design concept with planting plan, 3-D renders for major features, and two rounds of revisions. Design fees range from $3,500 to $12,000 depending on project scale and are credited against the build contract at signing. We don't charge for the initial consultation.
All installed plant material carries a two-year guarantee against failure from establishment causes — disease, drought stress, or poor establishment — on projects with our recommended irrigation. Trees and large shrubs are warranted for three years. We don't warrant plants lost to acts of nature (ice storms, flooding) or improper client care, but we'll be straightforward about what happened and work with you on replacement.
We work primarily in Boston, Brookline, Newton, Wellesley, Weston, Concord, Lincoln, Dover, Needham, and Dedham. For larger projects, we occasionally work further afield — contact us to discuss. We don't take on work where travel time compromises our ability to supervise the installation properly.
Your property deserves a landscape equal to it.
The first consultation is complimentary. We walk your property, listen to what you're hoping for, and tell you honestly whether it's a project we can execute well.
